How Do They Compare? // Harry Potter

I changed my blog design! So if you came to The Second Brother and it looked different, you didn't come to the wrong blog.

I am going to try to do a blog series for the first time. It will be called How Do They Compare? I will take a book that was made into a movie and compare them. It won't be a review. I will be seeing how they are similar and different.

The first one will be Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Most books that are made into movies are usually completely different from each other. This is not the case with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I don't feel the need to point out similarities between the book and movie because they're almost identical. Instead I will point out a few differences.

The movie took out a handful of scenes. They were not hugely significant scenes. The ones they took out would not have moved the plot of the movie in a way that justified them being there.

The most notable difference is a side plot that involves Hagrid and a baby dragon. The movie starts the side plot, but doesn't finish it like the book. Instead they make a passing comment about how the issue was resolved. I think it's unfortunate. The book resolves the issue in a way that expertly sets up an important scene. The movie still sets up the scene, but in a less memorable way.

This brings up the next difference. The important scene I mentioned above also has small differences. In the book Hagrid, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, and Neville Longbottom go into the Forbidden Forest. In the movie Neville doesn't go with them. Instead Ron Weasley goes and they spice the scene up with more life and death action.

Now movies and books will never be exactly the same. There is no way you can turn a two/three hundred paged book into a two hour movie someone will sit through and enjoy.

In short, the book and the movie are both enjoyable and expertly done.

I am planning on doing one of these once a month for a couple months. Next I am going to do The Hobbit. You can expect it at the end of September/ beginning of October.

Are there any book/movie comparisons you'd like to see in the future? Let me know in the comments.

Until next time,
Jonathan

  2. Great post, Jonathan! This definitely sounds like an interesting book and movie...
For future posts, you could consider When Calls the Heart. :) You'd have to read the book but that's okay! ;D
