How Do They Compare? // The Hobbit

It's time for another How Do They Compare. This time I am doing The Hobbit.

Minor Spoilers Ahead!!!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The first movie covers chapter 1 through chapter 6 of the book.

The first movie in the trilogy follows the book fairly closely. They made a few changes to spice it up a little though.

Changes:
Azog is one of the biggest changes. In the book Azog is mentioned in passing towards the beginning and that is it. There aren't even orcs in the book. Just goblins and wargs. In the movie he plays a major role.

Radagast the Brown is nowhere in the book. However he is in the book for The Fellowship of the Ring.

When all the dwarves show up at Bilbo's house they come in pairs. In the movie they show up in the same order but they group the last few dwarves together and Thorin Oakenshield shows up way later. In the book he comes with Gandalf, Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur.

When the dwarves are captured by the trolls, Bilbo stalls for time in the movie. Gandalf stalls in the book.

In the book the dwarves aren't chased to Rivendell by orcs and wargs.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Chapter 7 through chapter 12

The second movie starts straying from the book more. They focus more on the storyline with Azog than the first movie.

There are some things that are in the book but aren't in the regular edition of the movie. But they are in the extended edition. I am not going to mention those in this post. I would highly recommend watching the extended edition for the first and second Hobbit. (I haven't seen the third yet.)

Changes:
They introduce another main orc in the movie named Bolg. Bolg is mentioned in the end of the book as Azogs son. The movie doesn't make that connection.

Legolas and Tauriel are not in the book. I kind of like Legolas being in the movie because it ties The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings together in a cool way. I know some people didn't like Legolas being in there at all.

The love story between Tauriel and Kili was nowhere in the book. I thought the whole storyline was interesting. (in a good way)

The barrel chase (one of the greatest scenes in the trilogy) is way different from the book. They spiced it up a lot.  In the book it's just a subtle escape. The movie turned it into a wild epic chase scene.

The Master of Lake Town is not a memorable character in the book. In the movie he is memorable in a bad way. Also his assistant Alfred is not in the book.

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

chapter 13 through 19

Changes:
Bard is not as much of a main character in the book as the movie. He kills the Smaug in both. The movie makes it more desperate and heroic.

J.R.R. Tolkien does not go into detail for the final battle. Peter Jackson (the director) does. The whole movie is about preparing and fighting The Battle of the Five Armies. The movie is the darkest of the whole trilogy. Tolkien keeps the final battle serious but not dark.

That is my comparison for The Hobbit. My favorite of the trilogy is The Desolation of Smaug. Overall I actually prefer The Hobbit over The Lord of the Rings.

My next comparison will be How to Train Your Dragon.

Which one of The Hobbit movies is your favorite? Do you like The Lord of the Rings better?

Until next time,
Jonathan

  1. Very interesting comparison. It's nice to see the differences side by side. Good job. I'm not sure which movies are my favorite. Each movie seems to have certain parts that I enjoy. I liked the first Lord of the Rings and I also enjoyed the Hobbit.
